Going the second mile

Picture
From the Law of Success, written by Napoleon Hill, we find one of the most astounding concepts ever conceived. The habit of doing more than paid for. It is a concept many people stray away from.  So many of us just want to do what is required, to get the paycheck, to work the 9-to-5 hours according to the job description, and nothing more. Look at the situation of most people in the workforce, they work for the sake of earning a living. The jobs they have seldom generate love and enthusiasm but instead cause stress and anxiety, so much that they hate showing up day to day. Take a silent survey of the people that you work with and ask yourself, do they truly love their job, are they excited to come to work each day? Do they have a good work ethic? I am sure the answers will not shock you. If you do not love the job that you have, you find reasons to avoid the job, the people, and the task you are required to fulfill. You make up excuses not to come to work every day.

There are many reasons why we should develop the habit of going the second mile or performing more service and better service than that for which we are paid. The first reason is that you want to establish a reputation of being that kind of person who is dependable, who is responsible, and one that can render a service of more value than expected. When you do this, there will be a limited number of people around you who will seek your competitive edge, regardless of what kind of work you are in. The truth of the matter is that when you are rendering as little service as you can possibly render, or in other words, just getting by, you are on thin ice. Inevitably when work is diminished you will be the first one dismissed. Most promotions ever given trace directly to the fact that the person who was promoted rendered more service and better service then for which he was paid.

Have you ever heard of the Law of Increasing Returns?  What it really means is shown in this example, if you are sowing seeds for apples and wait while the Law of Increasing Returns becomes effective, you will find out if taking the time, that you will realize you have sown a beautiful apple grove of trees that generates apples, and apples, and more apples. Following this Law of Increasing Returns is like saying “You can’t beat God's giving no matter how you try”. God’s provision will always be more than what you or another generates. Don't just feed a man a fish but teach him how to fish, so he can take care of himself and his family - that's really the Law of Increasing Returns. If we walk by faith we will uncover this powerful Law of Increasing Returns and we will not be disappointed. Render value to entire strangers and others that you may never see again. The purpose in the long run is, you have benefited others with great value. You can no more render service without receiving compensation then you can withhold the service without suffering the loss of rewards. Compensation goes beyond money and covers a vast arena of things. A closed fist cannot receive the blessings coming to you, but an open palm reaching upward toward the heavens can receive the gifts from heaven. It is important to go the Second Mile for these two reasons. First, make it your business to render more service and better service than for which you are paid. Do this and before you know it you will be getting more work, more payments for work done, interest from other people and a new status of leadership where you are. Your life will take on new meaning and increase in other areas, far more than only you, by yourself could have done.  Second, the knowledge that you gain can become powerful, only if you organize the knowledge. Keep good records. Napoleon Hill says, “You can never be and you cannot become successful without developing leadership in your chosen occupation”. Ponder this lesson others and I have learned for success. There is always room for the one who can be relied upon to deliver when he or she says they will deliver.

Give this a try, go the second mile, and see how your life will change.

May the blessings be,
Elizabeth Rice
