Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Rice was interviewed by Eric Barrows of NYDN to discuss her involvement, with a group of fellow Virginia Union University students, in the sit-ins at the lunch room counter of Thalhimers Department Store in Richmond, Virginia on February 20, 2016. Mrs. Rice's brother, Ford Tucker Johnson, who was arrested for refusing to leave his seat in the "whites only" section of a Virginia courtroom, was also among these heralded citizens recognized by the newspaper for their courage during such turbulent times of the 1960s.
