this week in Richmond with david bailey (WCVE-TV) - June 14, 2015
Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson Rice was a guest on This Week in Richmond, hosted by David Bailey, which aired on WCVE-23, Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 9:00 am. She related her experiences with the Richmond 34 in the Richmond Sit-ins at Thalhimers Department Store, February 22, 1960. She related her personal involvement in 1960 all the way to fifty years later when she was compelled to start her own commemoration march to remember the history that had passed.
In 2004, she got the Richmond Police Department, Virginia Union University, civil rights leaders around the city, local media and government to become involved, along with a proclamation from the Mayor. In front of the Thalhimers building, many met to acknowledge the past and the future. Awards were given out to organizations and others who had been involved in the movement for many years were present. At the conclusion of this march, Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt, granddaughter of Mr. William Thalhimer, who had arrested those in the sit-ins, made herself known to Mrs. Rice. She also pledged her support to help celebrate the fiftieth anniversary in 2010. Because of her efforts and support of the whole business community, the Richmond 34 had an outstanding 50th anniversary.
